What Are Indications for Laboratory Testing in Dogs and Cats?

In our quest to ensure the optimal health of pets, diagnostic tests, such as blood panels, prove to be necessary and useful for a variety of reasons, including:

Heartworm Prevention

In warm, humid climates, dogs are at an increased risk of contracting heartworm from mosquito bites. Pets can easily be protected from this life-threatening parasite with preventive medications. Before administering heartworm preventive to a dog, however, it’s essential that our veterinarian screens for the parasite because administering preventive to a heartworm positive dog can be fatal. This screening is accomplished through annual blood testing.

Health Screenings

Depending on your pet’s medical history, condition, breed, and age, routine blood tests might be recommended during regular wellness exams. Blood tests can help our veterinarians establish a baseline of your pet’s general health and facilitate early detection of developing conditions and diseases.

Health Concerns

Pets with very different health problems can exhibit similar symptoms. Diagnostic testing is a useful tool for identifying and monitoring abnormalities as well as formulating an appropriate treatment plan.
